Funding Research, Travel, and Transformative Learning Experiences – Helping students turn ideas into action through funded research, travel, and experiential learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
About the SRTG Program
For more than 20 years, the New College of Florida Student Research and Travel Grant (SRTG) Program has supported students pursuing research, creative projects, scholarly travel, and professional development opportunities. The program helps students advance their academic goals by providing funding for activities related to thesis work, tutorials, Independent Study Projects (ISPs), conference presentations, and Area of Concentration (AOC) studies.
SRTG funding is made possible through the generous support of the New College Alumni Association, the New College Foundation, New College of Florida, and community partners.
Award Amount
Students may receive up to $700 in funding to support eligible research, travel, and academic projects.
Funding Priorities
Applications are evaluated on the quality, feasibility, and academic merit of the proposed project. While the categories below represent funding priorities, all applications are reviewed holistically, and a particularly strong proposal may receive funding regardless of category.
Funding may be awarded for:
- Thesis Research
- Research supplies
- Equipment
- Travel related to thesis work
- Data collection and field research
- Pre-Thesis Research
- Exploratory research projects
- Research supplies and equipment
- Travel supporting future thesis development
- Professional Conference Presentations
- Travel to present scholarly or creative work at professional conferences
- Students are encouraged to review E. Leininger et al., “Ten Simple Rules for Attending Your First Conference” before applying.
- Independent Study Projects (ISP)
- Projects with a clearly defined plan
- Research or experiential learning connected to an AOC or thesis
- Course and Tutorial Projects
- Academic projects with a clear educational purpose
- Activities that support a student’s AOC or thesis goals
Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by a committee of New College alumni and faculty members. Preference is given to students who have not previously received an SRTG award; however, all eligible applications are considered based on the strength of the proposal and available funding.
How To Apply
To be considered for a Student Research and Travel Grant (SRTG), students must be in good academic standing and submit a complete application by the applicable deadline.
A complete application includes:
- The appropriate online application form
- All required supporting documentation
- A letter of support submitted by a New College of Florida faculty member

The SRTG Program offers two funding categories, each with its own application process and review timeline.
Research Grant applications support thesis research, pre-thesis research, Independent Study Projects (ISPs), tutorials, and other approved academic projects.

Application Deadlines
- Student Proposals must be submitted by: Monday, October 19, 2026, 5pm
- Faculty Letter of Recommendation Deadline: Wednesday, October 21, 2026 5pm
Research Grant applications are reviewed twice each academic year.
Conference Presentation Grants support students who have been accepted to present their scholarly or creative work at a professional conference.
Application Deadlines
Applications are reviewed monthly.
Students may apply once they have received official notification that their presentation proposal has been accepted by the conference organizers.

Special Application Instructions
Group Research Projects
For research projects involving multiple students, one student may submit the application on behalf of the group. However, all participating students must be identified as members of the project team within the application.
Conference Co-Presenters
Students presenting together at a conference must each submit their own individual application, even if they are co-authors or co-presenters on the same presentation.
