New Music New College Season Opens with Andrew McKenna Lee, Sept 18
New Music New College presents its first performance of the 2010-2011 season on Saturday, September 18 at 8 pm in Mildred Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road. This concert by guitarist/composer Andrew McKenna Lee and percussionist Michael McCurdy will be full of contrasts – from the delicate tones of acoustic guitar to the varied sounds of struck percussion, from the tonally grounded harmony of the Baroque to the minimalist pulsations of Steve Reich. Tickets are $15 per event or $55 for the five-concert season. A free demo/discussion is scheduled for Friday, September 17 at 3:30 pm in Sainer. New College Student/Faculty Research on Invasive Pythons Airs Thursday, 8/26 on WEDU
Tune in to WEDU public television on Thursday, August 26, at 8 p.m. as research by New College students and faculty on invasive pythons in Florida is featured on Gulf Coast Journal with Jack Perkins.
This past year, students from biology professor Meg Lowman’s ecology and conservation biology classes, as well as bioinformatics and computational science professors Christopher Hart and Leon Kaganovskiy’s classes, conducted research on the threat and pervasiveness of invasive pythons in our state. Interviews with the student and faculty researchers along with footage shot and produced by them will be aired on Thursday’s program. Please tune in.
New College Dock Closed Due to Structural Damage
(August 17, 2010) – Structural field work at New College of Florida this week determined that the bayfront dock behind College Hall is unsafe. Photos taken under the dock show diagonal shear cracking (see photo), which typically causes catastrophic failure with little warning. U.S. News & World Report Ranks New College #5 among Public Liberal Arts Colleges
(August 17, 2010) — U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of the nation’s top colleges and universities were released today and for the second year in a row Sarasota-based New College of Florida is ranked #5 among all public liberal arts colleges in the United States. New College Kicks Off 2010-2011 School Year with Orientation and Mini Classes this Week
(August 16, 2010) — A bustle returned to the New College of Florida campus in Sarasota this weekend, as around 240 new students arrived with plenty of gear in tow. Orientation week for new students started on Sunday (August 15) and runs through next Sunday (August 22), with plenty of fun activities planned. Returning students will be back on Wednesday, August 18, with mini classes set to run on Thursday and Friday throughout the day. The first day of classes for the 2010-2011 school year, which marks the 50th Anniversary of New College’s founding, is on Monday, August 23. Read the rest of this entry »
