Students Receive Gilman Scholarship to Help Fund Study Abroad
Two New College of Florida students have been recognized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Third-year students Madeleine Yount and Shana Bergman have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Yount received $5,000 — the maximum amount possible — for her proposal to study sustainable development and social justice in rural northeast Brazil.
Bergman received $4,500 to study mathematics, biology and chemistry in Norway.
Yount and Bergman from South Florida were among the 30 percent of applicants selected for the award. Since 2008, New College has had 14 Gilman Scholars.
Established in 2000, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which is federally funded and administered by the Institute of International Education, provides “scholarships for study abroad to U.S. undergraduates with financial need, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study-abroad destinations,” according to a news release.
