November 1, 2012—New College’s popular lecture series, New Topics New College, will be featured on “Community – The TV Show” with Annette Scherman on Sunday, November 4, at 4:30 pm and again on Saturday, December 1, at 8 pm. Both shows air on SNN TV in the Sarasota and Bradenton markets.  SNN is carried on Comcast television channel 6 and Brighthouse channel 26. Following the initial airing, the programs will also be available online at www.communitysarasota.net.
The upcoming shows focus on the 2012-2013 New Topics New College season series and feature alumna and mental health expert Mary Ruiz, president and CEO of Manatee Glens, and former U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe James McGee.
Ruiz will preview her New Topics talk scheduled for December 4 entitled “Courting Prescription Pain Medication: For Better or Worse?,” which focuses on the causes and consequences of the prescription drug epidemic that claims the lives of seven Floridian each day. Drawing on more than 30 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, most of which was spent in Africa, career diplomat McGee will discuss his March 21 talk entitled “The Problems, Promise and Potential of Sub-Saharan Africa.”  Both talk start at 5:30.
In addition to Ruiz and McGee, New College Director of Communications and Marketing Jake Hartvigsen will discuss the rest of the 2012-2013 New Topics season series, which includes national political correspondents Charlie Mahtesian (Politico) and Alexis Simendinger (Real Clear Politics); Jeremy Wallace of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune; New College Associate Professor of Political Science Frank Alcock; Dr. Stephen Leatherman, famous for his annual analysis of the country’s top beaches; aging expert Tom Isselman, CEO of Sarasota’s Institute for the Ages; New College alumnus and former chief of staff for Sarasota Memorial Hospital John Collins, M.D.; and international climate change expert Dr. Pier Villenga.
