The 2013-14 New Topics New College series will feature speakers from the worlds of medical research, global finance, international affairs, women’s rights, environmental conservation and rock and roll.
The six-program series, a collaboration of New College of Florida and the New College Foundation, brings nationally-known experts to Sarasota for lectures on timely topics, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience and a reception with the speaker.
The topics and speakers for this year are: a look at Florida Wildlife Corridor, with photographer Carlton Ward (Nov. 21); research into brain health, with Dr. Michael Mullan of the Roskamp Institute (Dec. 5); the creation of rock stars, with music executive Tony Michaelides (Jan. 21); the status of financial markets, with Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren (Feb. 6); the future of women’s health and rights, with Judy Norsigian, author of “Our Bodies, Ourselves” (Feb. 25) and the war in Afghanistan, with David Staats, former U.S. consul in Pakistan (March 19).
All programs are at 5:30 p.m. in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion on New College’s Caples Campus, 5313 Bay Shore Road (immediately south of the Ringling Museum). Ward is a conservation photographer and eighth-generation Florida. He will speak about his experience on the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition and will show photos and video from the trek. Today many dream of being a Rock Star but in reality very few are. What is it that separates one from the rest? Why do we aspire to be a star? In a career spanning over thirty years, Tony Michaelides worked with some of the world’s biggest selling artists, U2, The Police, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Whitney Houston, N Sync etc. It gave him a rare insight and a behind-the-scenes look at how real rock stars are created. Rosengren is president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a currently a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee. He has written extensively on macroeconomics, international banking, bank supervision, and risk management; including articles in leading economics and finance journals. Much of his recent research has focused on how problems in the financial sector impact the real economy. (This event is brought to us by the Global Interdependence Center.)

The US strategic goal for Afghanistan is to defeat and prevent the return of al-Qaida and its affiliates. To achieve this goal, the US initiated in 2001 an integrated counterinsurgency campaign: military operations against the insurgents, creation of a representative government, and economic assistance. David Staats, former U.S. consul in Peshawar, Pakistan will discuss the application of U.S. policy in Afghanistan. He is personally acquainted with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Jalaluddin Haqqani (head of the Haqqani Network terrorist organization) and other Afghan leaders.
