The Division of Natural Sciences and Office of Career Services at New College of Florida are proud to congratulate those Novo Collegians who will be attending medical school in the fall of 2009. In total, five students, including four from this year’s graduating class, will be entering colleges of medicine in Florida, Texas and Virginia next year.

The New College graduates entering med school next fall are Molly Burges, who was accepted to the University of Florida, University of South Florida and Florida State University colleges of medicine; Carli Cooper, who was accepted to the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia; Blaine Farmer, who was accepted to the University of Florida, University of South Florida, University of Miami and Florida International University medical school programs; Benjamin Stork, who was accepted to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida; and Molly Thompson, who was accepted to the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio, Texas.

Professor of Biology Sandra L. Gilchrist, the College’s pre-medical advisor, credits New College’s rigorous and demanding science curriculum with helping to prepare students for the medical field.

“Our science students are well-prepared for medical careers, as well as allied health sciences,” she said. “Through strong faculty advisement and the fact that students can shape their course work, tutorials and independent projects to meet their own personal interests and goals, we are able to provide them with excellent preparation for the highly competitive application process involved in gaining entry into medical school.”

This year’s contingent of graduating students accepted into medical school continues a successful tradition of medical school and graduate school enrollees from New College.  In total, more than 80 percent of New College seniors go on to attend graduate or professional school within six years of graduation, according to the College’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
