New College Triathletes Take on Siesta Key

May 20, 2011 — Six New College of Florida students (Katharine Dean, Stephanie Larumbe, Farrell Ocasio, David Smith, Dorothea Trotter and Bryant Turffs) took a break from their final week of studies to compete in the Florida International Triathlon on Siesta Key Beach, May 14, 2011. Turffs finished in the top 15 out of all sprint triathlon competitors and third in his age group with a time of 1:05:56.

In the women’s 18-24 sprint triathlon group, Trotter finished fifth overall with the second best time in the 5-kilometer run, and Larumbe had the fastest swim at just under seven and a half minutes. In the 18-24 men’s sprint triathlon group, Smith had the second best time in the quarter-mile swim finishing under 7 minutes.

The Florida International Triathlon was hosted by the Sarasota Storm Tri Club. This year the club added the sprint triathlon and duathlon to the usual international distance triathlon. The sprint triathlon consists of a quarter-mile swim, 13-mile bike and 5-kilometer run.
