Coming on the heels of top rankings from U.S. News & World Report, Forbes.com and The Princeton Review is a sweet tribute from Mother Jones magazine, which listed New College among “10 cool schools that will blow your mind, not your budget.”  Sitting pretty as the second college on the list in the magazine’s September/October “Mojo Mini College Guide,” New College was referred to as “The Sarah Lawrence of the South.”

Mother Jones cited New College as the best value for its “brainy beach bums.” Known for its smart, fearless journalism, the magazine stated, “The Sarah Lawrence of the South favors tutorials and evaluations over giant lectures and letter grades. In the past 14 years, it’s cranked out more Fulbright Scholars per student than Harvard, Stanford and Yale.”

New College was the only Florida institution of higher education to make the Mother Jones’ grade. Top of the list was Berea College in Kentucky which, like New College, is a member of the Consortium for Innovative Environments in Learning (CIEL), a network of distinguished higher education institutions. New College was one of CIEL’s eight founding members.

As a public college, New College has been compared favorably with the private Ivy League colleges in terms of its high academic standards, innovative learning paradigm and intimate learning environment, with a 10-to-1 student/faculty ratio.  An honors education remains a bargain for in-state students at about $4,700, and an excellent value for out-of-state students at about $26,000.  Some 95 percent of all students have their tuition needs met through financial aid and scholarships.

Mother Jones is a nonprofit news organization that specializes in investigative, political, and social justice reporting. They currently have two main channels: an award-winning bimonthly national magazine (circulation 240,000), and a website featuring new, original reporting 24-7.
