Dr. Nat Stahl began teaching mathematics to incarcerated students at Suffolk County House of Correction, as part of a GED program. He went on to teach high school, K-8, after school programs in the Math Circle, undergraduate and graduate classes, and field trip groups at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath). In 2017, Nat became MoMath’s Chief of Education, where he remained until 2022, managing a great team of educators, designing programs, teaching lessons and summer camp sessions, and helping to move MoMath online during COVID-19. For the past three years, Nat taught AP Calculus and Dual Enrollment math at Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, FL.
Nat’s expertise is in enrichment content, student engagement, and conceptual understanding of mathematics. His postgraduate credentials include a Master’s in Mathematics for Teaching from Harvard University Extension School and an Ed.D in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. In both programs, Nat explored deep mathematical topics beyond the standard school syllabus, and studied diverse approaches to pedagogy. Nat is very excited to join the New College faculty!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT?
I would tell them that if they are passionate about learning, and thrive when given freedom to explore their interests, New College may be just the place for them.
WHAT MAKES NEW COLLEGE OF
FLORIDA SO UNIQUE?
The small size and ability to connect with students, the unique evaluation system, and most of all the wonderful people in every role here.
What made you decide to teach at New College of Florida?
I believe that my experience with enrichment math content and pedagogy will help motivate students, both those who love math and those with a bit of anxiety. New College offers an environment where I can really contribute, and where my skills and experience are valued.
