David Allen Harvey is Professor of History and International/Area Studies at New College of Florida, where he has taught since 2000. He is serving as Chair of the Faculty from 2025 to 2028, and previously served as Chair of the Division of Social Sciences and as the inaugural dean of the Great Books program. Dr. Harvey is a specialist in French cultural history and is the author of four books, a dozen articles, and dozens of book reviews and short essays. His most recent book, Tropical Despotisms: Enlightened Reform in the French Caribbean (Cornell University Press, 2024), won the 2025 Mary Alice and Philip Boucher prize from the French Colonial Historical Society.
