Academic Honor Violation Information
The Academic Honor Code defines New College’s standards for honesty in coursework and research. It explains what counts as academic misconduct, outlines the rights and responsibilities of students, and describes the steps for resolving concerns, ranging from informal resolution with an instructor to formal hearings. At its core, the Code protects fairness, fosters learning, and ensures due-process protections for every student.
- Plagiarism
- Cheating (including unauthorized AI use, devices, or collaboration)
- Unauthorized group work/collaboration
- Fabrication or misrepresentation
- Multiple submissions without permission
- Abuse of academic materials/process
- Complicity
- Obstructing or hindering inquiries
- Notification of allegations and access to evidence
- Timely, impartial meeting with an administrator
- Option for a non-speaking advisor
- Right not to answer specific questions (with possible adverse inference)
- Ability to dispute sanctions (S&I) and appeal hearing outcomes
- Request removal of biased panelists
- Student & Instructor Resolution (S&I) – instructor checks prior history; resolution can be accepted, disputed (sanction review), or dropped.
- Administrative Case Resolution – for straightforward cases; decided by an administrator using a preponderance standard.
- Academic Honor Code Hearing – required for second or egregious offenses; panel of 2 faculty + 2 students; sanctions broader in scope
- Sanctions: Ranging from redo assignments and probation to suspension, expulsion, or revocation of degree
- Records: Responsible findings create a confidential record; removal may be petitioned after five years; expulsion records permanent
- Appeals: Limited to due-process error, bias, disproportionate sanction, or insufficient evidence; appeal is record-only
Report or Manage an Academic Honor Code Violation
Maxient is NCF’s secure case management system. Maxient is New College’s secure system for submitting and tracking Academic Honor Code cases. Faculty use it to report suspected violations and upload documentation; students use it to receive official notices, respond to allegations, and follow outcomes. The system ensures that every case is handled consistently, confidentially, and in line with the procedures outlined in the Academic Honor Code. Faculty use it to submit and track allegations; students use it to receive updates.
- Check prior history with the Provost’s Office (determines Student & Instructor eligibility)
- Gather documentation (assignment, rubric, Turnitin/AI reports, communications)
- Notify your division chair
- Meet with the Student and discuss the Academic Honor Code & use the Student & Instructor Resolution Form
- Log in via NCF Portal → Maxient tile or Click this link
- Select “Report Academic Honor Code Allegation”
- Enter student/course info, attach evidence, and select proposed path (S&I, Admin Resolution, Hearing Referral if applicable)
- Be sure to upload the signed Student-Instructor Form to the document section of the Maxient Report: Student & Instructor Resolution Form
- Submit: Watch your NCF email for confirmation and potential next steps
- The Provost’s Office reviews and determines the resolution path.
- Students are notified via NCF email.

- Can a student withdraw after an allegation? → No; an “Incomplete” may be issued until resolution.
- Standard of proof? → Preponderance of the evidence.
- Who serves on a hearing panel? → Two faculty (Chair + different division) and two students.
- Are AI violations included? → Yes, unauthorized AI use may count as cheating or an egregious violation
