Michael Gorup’s research focuses on democratic theory, the history of political thought, and the politics of race and colonialism, with an area focus on the United States. He is particularly interested in understanding the unique forms of domination that have accompanied the rise of modern democracy. His current book project, tentatively titled The Counterrevolutionary Shadow: Race and the Making of the American People, examines the vexed relationship between race and democratic peoplehood in the history of American political thought.

At New College, he teaches courses in political theory and U.S. Constitutional Law. Prior to joining the New College faculty he taught in the Critical Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
