U.S. News & World Report Ranks New College #5 among Public Liberal Arts Colleges

(August 17, 2010) — U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of the nation’s top colleges and universities were released today and for the second year in a row Sarasota-based New College of Florida is ranked #5 among all public liberal arts colleges in the United States. New College also is ranked among the nation’s Top 100 liberal arts colleges, both private and public, coming in at #99.

New College is the only liberal arts college in Florida to be rated among the nation’s Top 100.  Eckerd College in St. Petersburg is ranked #137.  In total, there are nearly 3,000 liberal arts colleges in the U.S.

This marks the sixth consecutive year that New College is listed among the nation’s Top 5 Public Liberal Arts Colleges and Top 100 Liberal Arts Colleges Overall by U.S. News & World Report.  Among Public Liberal Arts Colleges, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and New College are the only non-military schools to make the magazine’s Top 5 rankings.

Among national research universities, only two Florida schools cracked the U.S. News & World Report Top 100.  In that category, the University of Miami is ranked #47 and the University of Florida is ranked #53.  Florida State University just missed the Top 100, placing at #104 among national research universities.
