New College of Florida Student Emily Martin Awarded a Women Contemporary Artists Scholarship
April 27, 2011—New College student Emily Martin has been awarded a scholarship by Women Contemporary Artists (WCA), a regional organization of women in the visual arts that provides visibility, encouragement and inspiration to female artists. Each year, WCA grants cash awards to two women students studying fine art with the goal of inspiring and supporting students who plan to continue with fine art as their focus.
Martin is a second-year student at New College and is interested in becoming an art conservator. Her Area of Concentration (major) is currently undecided, but will likely be a combination of art, art history and chemistry.
Three scholarships were awarded during the WCA’s End of Year Party on Sunday, April 17, at the Pinebrook Country Club in Venice, Fla. Other scholarship winners included Shannon Whitmarsh-Fishburn, a graphic artist from State College of Florida, and Claudia Daniels, a printmaker from Ringling College of Art and Design. At the ceremony, the scholarship recipients presented their art to WCA members and talked about their future goals.
In addition to the cash award, winners of the scholarship received a free one-year membership to WCA. Benefits of membership include free exhibition fees to participate in seasonal exhibitions, participation in WCA programs and critiques, an online newsletter and mentoring opportunities from experienced member artists. The scholarship is open to students of State College of Florida (north and south campuses), New College of Florida and Ringling College of Art and Design.
