New College of Florida Promotes Faculty
April 2, 2012 — The New College Board of Trustees recently approved promotion and tenure for two New College faculty members, Tarron Khemraj to associate professor of economics and Necmettin Yildirim to associate professor of mathematics. New College also announces the promotion of three veteran faculty members to full professor: Barbara Hicks to professor of political science, John Newman to professor of religion and Amy Reid to professor of French language & literature. The promotions are effective on August 7, 2012.
Dr. Tarron Khemraj is an applied macro-economist whose research focuses on problems in monetary economics, financial economics and open economy macroeconomics. He also studies the political economy of development and underdevelopment. His primary teaching interests are economic development, econometrics, international economics and contemporary political economy. He joined the New College faculty in 2007 and holds the William G. Selby and Marie Selby Endowed Chair in Economics. He also serves as a research associate at the Caribbean Centre for Money and Finance, University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago.
Dr. Necmettin Yildirim is an applied mathematician whose research is on mathematical modeling of intracellular regulatory networks. He is interested in development of quantitative mathematical models to better understand how individual components of such networks are assembled and dynamically regulated. Professor Yildirim holds the Soo Bong Chae Endowed Chair in Mathematics at New College. Before joining the faculty in 2006, he held postdoctoral positions at UNC-Chapel Hill and McGill University.
Dr. Barbara Hicks joined the New College faculty in 2001. She teaches comparative politics with courses on Russia, China, the European Union, the collapse of communism and transitions to democracy. Her research interests center on social movements and democratization in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and she has conducted research in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. Hicks received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and her doctorate from Indiana University. She is the director of New College’s International Studies Program.
Dr. John Newman specializes in Asian religions. His recent courses include Indian Buddhist Thought, Religions of South Asia and Asian Religions in America. On the faculty since 1990, Newman holds the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professorship at New College. He earned his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Amy Baram Reid began teaching French language and literature at New College in 1995. She offers courses on the Renaissance, 19th-century literary movements, contemporary drama and francophone writing from Québec, the Caribbean and Africa. Reid is also the director of the New College Gender Studies Program and teaches classes on women’s writing and feminist theory. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from Yale University and holds a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University. Her English translation of Queen Pokou: Concerto for a Sacrifice, by Véronique Tadjo, was published by Ayebia Clarke and selected as one of NPR’s favorite reads for 2010. She is currently working on a translation of Tadjo’s most recent novel, Loin de mon père (2010). In November she was elected to a two-year term as president of the American Council for Québec Studies.
