Once a year, the New College of Florida Art department opens its doors to the public for a viewing of works by its most ambitious young artists. The 2017 Juried Student Art Exhibition opens February 1 at the College’s Isermann Gallery.
The artwork in this year’s exhibition includes drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and installation. Kim Anderson, associate professor of art, says the students of Florida’s premier liberal arts college draw from diverse academic interests to express ideas and fuel compelling works of art.

For example, an ambitious and laboriously hand cut paper flora installation documents environmental ramifications of invasive plants. Another artwork employs geometric abstraction to reflect on the role of digital technology and its impact on our most intimate and psychological human bonds.
“To be able to distill other academic pursuits in purely visual terms offers our students a unique landscapes for creative and intellectual inquiry,” Anderson said. “This exhibition offers alternative insights into the minds and perspectives of our state’s most talented young students.”
Anderson invites the public to join her and the students for an intimate and informative session with this year’s juror during our public presentation at the artists’ reception.
The reception and awards ceremony will be Thursday, February 5, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Isermann Gallery. Awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m., with a talk by this year’s juror, Vicky Randall of Ringling College of Art and Design.
Randall attended Middle Tennessee State University for her BFA degree where she studied sculpture, painting and metalsmithing. She received her MFA sculpture degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Randall has been creating work in fabricated metal and bronze for over 35 years. She is well-known for her monumental sculptures in stainless steel, and her work is represented in public art installations and over fifty private collections in the US, UK and Germany.
This event is sponsored by a generous donation from Art & Frame of Sarasota and is free and open to the public.
