New College of Florida Is a 2012 Fiske Best Buy School
August 23, 2011 — New College of Florida has been featured in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012 and named a Best Buy school, one of 49 institutions – 24 public and 25 private – to earn that distinction. New College has consistently been rated a Best Buy school in the Fiske Guide since 2003.
“‘Come here to learn what you like, how you like it,’ says one humanities major,” the guide reports, “otherwise there’s a ‘very high risk of turning into a boring robot elsewhere.’”
The guide’s opening paragraph about New College reads: “The mere existence of New College of Florida is proof that it’s possible to find success through individualism. This school has done away with grades and GPAs, so students compete with themselves rather than their classmates. The laid-back student body and rigorous academic program ‘proves to students that learning can be a self-directed, fun, and productive experience,’ a sophomore says.”
New College of Florida also recently landed the no. 16 spot on Forbes’ “Top 100 Best Buy Colleges for 2011” and was featured as one of the country’s best colleges for the 10th consecutive year in The Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges: 2012 Edition.
The Fiske Guide, compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, presents an insider’s look at what it deems the “best and most interesting” 300-plus schools in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. The guide showcases the personality of each school through in-depth evaluations and student surveys about the student body, academics, social life, financial aid, campus setting, housing, food and extracurricular activities.
