The New College Foundation’s 2021-2022 New Topics lecture series will continue Thursday, Feb. 10, via Zoom with author Tony Hiss. Hiss is the author of 15 books and was a staff writer for The New Yorker for 30 years and a visiting scholar at New York University for 25 years.  He lives in New York City with his wife, the writer Lois Metzger.

Hiss’s talk, “Rescuing the Planet: The Race We Can Win to Save a Million Species,” expounds on the idea that most species can survive the climate and extinction crises if at least half their original habitat is protected over the next 30 years. The goal is 50 x 50—protect half the earth by 2050. In May of this year, 196 countries will meet in China to take the first big step: 30 x 30—protect half the earth by 2030. For his book, Hiss traveled around North America and met with extraordinary people and groups that were already working tirelessly and inventively to save North America’s’s beloved landscapes and iconic species. In his talk, he will also share information about the ways others can join this movement.
