John Jakes is the man who “literally shaped the way historical novels are written,” as his longtime friend and fellow author Don Bruns will tell you.
Best known for his historical fiction series’ like “The Kent Family Chronicles” and “North and South,” Jakes’ work has resonated with fans globally. In fact, the latter title, partially set in Civil War-era Charleston, gained so much popularity in Germany that tourists would come from overseas to get married in the South Carolina city. Now his friends hope to boost his legacy through the newly established John Jakes Endowed Writing Scholarship at New College of Florida, intended for students majoring in writing.
