Dr. Ernestine Bradley to Speak at New College of Florida
Professor, scholar, author and former wife of U.S. Senator Bill Bradley to dicuss “The Re-Emergence of Jewish Voices in Contemporary Germany.”
New College of Florida and the American Jewish Committee will host Dr. Ernestine Bradley, professor, scholar, speaker, author, cancer survivor and former wife of U.S. Senator Bill Bradley, as she speaks on “The Re-Emergence of Jewish Voices in Contemporary Germany” on April 1, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Harry Sudakoff Center on the New College campus. The talk is free and open to the public, but advance reservations are highly recommended.
Born in Germany and a college professor for more than thirty years, Bradley is an expert on the legacy of the Holocaust in German literature and has a special interest in how post-Nazi Germany has confronted this legacy in politics, society and literature. She also speaks of her own personal journey to come to terms with the unspeakable horror perpetrated in her native land and she reflects on the rise of Nazism and how the Holocaust could have happened. Bradley currently teaches courses on literature and history of the Holocaust at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Her publications include The Language of Silence: West German Literature and the Holocaust, as well as The Way Home: A German Childhood, An American Life.
Bradley received her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to joining the faculty at the New School, she taught French at Spelman College, Atlanta, GA, German at the State University of NY at Stony Brook, and was Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Montclair State University. She has held visiting professorships at Yale and Columbia universities and is the recipient of various awards and fellowships, among them NDEA- and NEH fellowships. She was also a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She is a trustee of the Leo Baeck Institute and a member of the Board of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies.
