Coe named Chairperson of the Faculty, Marks to Serve as Alternate
(March 22, 2010) Richard Coe, professor of economics, has been elected chairperson of the New College faculty and Susan Marks, associate professor of Judaic studies, as the alternate chairperson by a vote of the faculty. They will begin their three-year terms at the start of the 2010-2011 academic year.
Professor Richard Coe teaches introduction to economic analysis, as well as upper-level courses in law and economics, poverty and redistributive policy, and government expenditures and taxation. A professor at New College since 1991, he has published several articles on poverty and welfare programs and is currently researching topics regarding the interrelationship between the legal and economic systems, particularly with respect to the dividing line between public and private interests. He holds M.A., J.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Kenyon College.
Professor Marks holds the Klingenstein Chair in Judaic Studies. She teaches varieties of Judaism and scriptural interpretation, as well as courses in theoretical aspects of religion. She holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, rabbinic ordination and a M.A. in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a B.A. in English from Reed College. Her research and publications address weddings, meal-time blessings and other practices of early Jews and early Christians. Since 2003, Professor Marks has been the coordinator of the Annual Judaic Studies Public Lecture at New College of Florida, sponsored by the Klingenstein Chair of Judaic Studies and the Jay Rudolph Endowment.
