Former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham was the keynote speaker this evening as 169 colorfully-clad graduates took their first steps into the future during New College’s 42nd Annual Commencement. On an exceptionally balmy Florida night, more than 2,000 family members, alums and friends gathered on the bayfront behind College Hall to celebrate one of New College’s largest classes ever. This year’s group of graduates included five Fulbright Scholars, two recipients of Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme assistantships, a French Government Teaching Assistantship recipient, and a host of other accomplished scholars.

“You are now graduates of one of Florida and America’s most distinguished colleges,” Graham told graduates. “But with that comes a responsibility. Just as America’s so-called ‘greatest generation’ saved the world in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, you, the ‘millenium generation’ will save our democracy in the 21st Century.”
In addition to Graham, New College President Mike Michalson, Provost Sam Savin and retired business manager for the New College Student Alliance, Barbara Berggren, also addressed the crowd. The Manatee High School Jazz Ensemble provided music for the ceremony.

“Graduates, this is your night,” Michalson told the crowd to a loud round of applause. “Bask in this moment, for such moments are rare in life. But in doing so, remember also that this is a cumulative moment. Thank your parents, and thank your faculty and classmates for having brought you to this point. I have no doubt that because of your efforts and theirs you will be successful as you go forward.”

Following a tradition that dates back to the College’s earliest years, many members of this year’s graduating class skipped formal attire and instead dressed in colorful outfits that included Roman togas, face painting, motorcycle gear, animal costumes, faerie outfits and an assortment of other choices.

Congratulations to New College’s Class of 2008!
