Art students planning May 3 exhibition

Students enrolled in Museum Studies: Artist as Curator course are collectively working on a local art exhibition with the theme ‘Home.’ The one-night event will take place Friday, May 3, from 5-9 p.m. at the Origami Air Studio in Sarasota. New College students and alumni, as well as unaffiliated local artists, can submit art to the grant-funded exhibition for consideration.
“We are hoping that artists will explore different forms of media to discover what ‘home’ represents to them,” explains Mia Reich, an art history thesis student and executive curator of the exhibition. “We have broadly defined the term in order to get the most varied range of responses.”
Students in the class gained an understanding of the responsibilities of working as a museum professional by curating their own exhibition.
“Though somewhat challenging, this experience has been incredibly beneficial,” said Danielle Whiting, a second-year museum studies student and educational curator. “I am thankful for the experience and believe I am better prepared now for any future employment as a museum professional. There are only nine students in this class, and each of us has worked remarkably hard to produce this final show. I am looking forward to receiving submissions!”
