Alumna Raymonda Burgman Named Associate Provost
(March 10, 2011) — New College of Florida today announced the appointment of Raymonda L. Burgman as associate provost in the Office of Academic Affairs, effective July 1, 2011, renewable on an annual basis. Burgman is currently on campus as an alumnae/i fellow, teaching a course on the “Economics of War.” She is an associate professor of economics at DePauw University in Indiana, from which she will be taking a two-year leave of absence.
Burgman graduated from New College with a degree in economics and subsequently received her master’s and doctorate degrees in economics from the University of Florida.
At DePauw, Burgman was the program coordinator for the Consortium for Faculty Diversity from 2006-09. She served as part-time dean of academic affairs and was appointed special adviser to the president in 2009. Her administrative experience at DePauw has focused on such areas as diversity and intercultural competence, faculty professional development and improved student retention. She also chaired DePauw’s task force on the status of women and families.
“Ray’s experience enhancing campus diversity, promoting faculty professional development and improving student retention is clearly an excellent fit for New College,” said President Gordon E. “Mike” Michalson. “She brings with her considerable institutional knowledge, not only as a New College graduate but also as a former board member of the New College Alumnae/i Association. We are delighted that she has agreed to take on this new challenge and have no doubt that she will be a great asset to the campus community in the period ahead.”
In her new position, Burgman will serve as liaison with the Office of Student Affairs to strengthen student retention, develop strategies to promote campus diversity through student and faculty mentoring, support faculty development and assist incoming Provost Steve Miles in dealings with the State University System of Florida, the Board of Governors and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
