The Keating Center

The Keating Center is a 7,500 sq. ft., $1 million Mediterranean-style building which is the permanent home of New College Foundation, New College Alumnae/i Association and New College Library Association, with office space for 17, two conference rooms, catering kitchen, reception hall, and an adjoining outdoor plaza on a one-acre site.

The center is gratefully named in honor of Ed and Elaine Keating of Longboat Key, longtime New College backers, and generous philanthropists whose wide-ranging support has helped countless local groups including the Asolo Performing Arts Center, the Asolo Theatre Festival Association, the Florida West Coast Symphony, The Ringling Museum of Art Foundation, the Ringling School of Art & Design, the Sarasota Opera Association, the Florida Studio Theatre, Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota Ballet of Florida and many others.

Elaine Keating has served on the New College Foundation board since 1996, and served as chairman of the student affairs committee. The Keatings contributed $600,000 toward construction of the new center, in addition to their ongoing annual support of the college. SMRT of Sarasota, a specialty firm in educational, healthcare, public safety and government projects, designed the building.

Captain Ralph E. Styles Memorial Flagpole

The flagpole outside of the Keating Center was dedicated on Friday, June 12, 2009 to honor World War II naval hero and New College pioneer Captain Ralph E. Styles.

Styles, who served as the College’s first director of planning during the 1960s, was a decorated submarine captain during World War II and one of the country’s last living survivors of Pearl Harbor. He also was a lifelong and generous supporter of New College and
its students.

He passed away in October 2009 at the age of 98. Following his death, friends and family members approached the College about placing a lighted flagpole on the campus to honor his memory.
