Keynote Speaker: Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian physician and founder of the Daughters For Life Foundation. Dr. Abuelaish was the first Palestinian granted privileges to work in an Israeli hospital and was known for treating patients from both Gaza and Israel. When three of his daughters were killed by Israeli shelling in 2009, he responded by writing I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey. A year later, he created the Daughters for Life Foundation to provide women of the Middle East with opportunities to earn college degrees, and to help those women create a better world when they return home. Dr. Abuelaish has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Student Speaker:Cassandra Corrado Cassandra Corrado was chosen by the student body to give a commencement address. She is a former student government president and has become an expert in women’s rights. During her first days on campus, she joined Vox, the student group that supports Planned Parenthood in Sarasota, quickly becoming its public relations chair and then co-president. In her second year, she planned a “Take Back the Night” event, to show support for women and opposition to sexual violence. It has grown every year since, with a full week of events in 2015. She serves as secretary on the board of directors on the national nonprofit Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health and works at the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, a long-running Sarasota organization.
