Dr. Frank Alcock, associate professor of political science, has been named a Senior Fulbright Scholar to New Zealand.  The award period is for four months, from February through May 2011 (spring semester).  Alcock will be hosted by the Institute of Policy Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

The award is for both research and lecturing.  For the research component, Alcock will explore the “politics of cap and trade” with a focus on New Zealand’s emissions trading legislation.  He will compare and contrast New Zealand’s legislation with that of other countries, as well as similarities between New Zealand’s emissions trading system and its use of catch shares in its fisheries sector.  In addition to serving as a roving guest lecturer, Alcock will organize a colloquium series at the Institute of Policy Studies.

Alcock will be accompanied by his wife, Sharon, and twin daughters, Katelin and Abigail.  The seven-year old girls will attend an elementary school in New Zealand during the award period.

“I’m thrilled with this opportunity,” states Alcock.  “It’ll be an adventure for the whole family.”

Frank Alcock teaches courses on global environmental politics, international law and sustainable development.  He is also director of New College’s Environmental Studies Program.  In the local community, Alcock serves as the director of the Marine Policy Institute at Mote Marine Laboratory, and appears regularly on Sarasota television station ABC 7 as a political analyst.  Prior to obtaining his Ph.D. from Duke University, he spent five years as an international policy analyst/economist at the U.S. Department of Energy.  Alcock holds an MA from George Washington University and a B.A .from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
