Sarasota’s New College of Florida will host a Social Entrepreneurship Conference on Saturday promoting innovative thinking and problem-solving

From its founding in 1960, New College of Florida has insisted that individual students work with their professors to design, as much as possible, their own education in accordance with their own interests, goals and values. That imperative is central in preparing intellectually curious students for lives of great achievement. So central, in fact, that it is enshrined in Florida Statute (1004.32)! No other public university in Florida, and almost no other university in the United States, can come even close to this level of customization.
The ability to take charge of one’s education attracts independent self-motivated thinkers. It fosters high levels of creativity, self-motivation and other skills vital to our society, whether in the workplace or the community. But the college holds a special place for talented, forward-thinking students who seek to better this world.
A wonderful instance of what happens when such students turn their creativity loose is occurring this weekend. New College will host the region’s inaugural Social Entrepreneurship Conference, an event designed to promote ideas that can make money in the business world in order to support or promote socially conscious projects.
