New College students have a chance to get out in the community this weekend and sample some great local food.
The Newtown Farmer’s Market is hosting the fourth annual Big Mama’s Collard Green Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., New College students can engage with and support members of the Newtown community by sampling many different recipes of collard greens and visiting local vendors.
“Our relationship with Newtown is really important,” says Jada McNeill, assistant director of the student activities and campus engagement office. “We support Newtown Nation, and it’s important that we continue to build on that relationship.” New College students have volunteered at the event for the past three years, and McNeill’s office is accepting new volunteers through Friday.
Visitors will get to sample collard greens from community members and many local chefs, in Creole, Cajun, Carribean, and southern styles. “I really want students to come out that day and enjoy it,” said VISTA Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Lapton. All proceeds from the event go to support the Newtown Farmer’s Market.
Newtown Farmer’s Market is open every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn how you can be a part of this event, email Sarah Lapton at firstname.lastname@example.org
