New College Student Has Article Published in February Anthropology News

New College of Florida had a large presence at a recent annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco with a total of eleven faculty, students and alumni presenting their research. Graduating from New College in May with a concentration in anthropology, Steven Garte-Wolf attended the AAA conference and presented a poster through the NASA (National Association of Student Anthropologists). Now, his article, “One Leg at a Time,” has been published in the February issue of Anthropology News.

“My poster was a convergence of my interests as I tried to redefine the site of Spanish Point to be more publicly accessible. The site is very important to Sarasota, yet not many Sarasotans realize that it exists. The gist of my poster, as is the gist of my thesis, is to get people involved by enlivening the site through a means of a more interactive, collaborative engagement with archaeology,” said Wolf.

Among other New College presenters at the conference were the following: Maria Vesperi, Professor of Anthroplogy – “The Nip and the Bite: Framing Debate about Race, Class and Gender as Heritage Performance”; Uzi Baram, Associate Professor of Anthropology – “Revealing a Hidden History: Looking for Angola’s Public Archaeology Program”; Erin Dean, Assistant Professor of Anthropology – “Political Construction of ‘Traditional’ Knowledge in Zanzibar”; Steve Garte-Wolf – “Improving Interpretation of Public Archaeology at Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, Florida.” Presentations by alumnae/i included Traci Ardren, 1988; Jennifer Robbins, 1996; Christa Craven, 1997; Eben Kirksey, 1997; Ben Hodges, 1999; Kate Goltermmill, 2000; and Bill Werner, 2004.

In addtion to formal presentations, New College was well represented among the attendees at the conference as well. Spotted at the conference were alumnae/i Gaby Vail, 1987, who currently is an adjunct anthropology professor at the College; Jessica Falcone, 1994; Alex Coe, 2004; Anna Higgins, 2001; Jagdeep Davies, 2005; Heather Normandale, 2005; Craig Schuetze, 2006; and Laine Forman, 2008.
