The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE) have announced that New College of Florida student Hope E. Reynolds has been selected as a recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study Arabic in Rabat, Morocco, for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Reynolds, who is originally from Wichita, Kansas, but who now resides in Sarasota, Florida, recently completed her first year at New College. She was one of only 850 students from throughout the U.S. to receive a competitive Gilman Scholarship for 2009.
In addition to her scholarship, Reynolds also was selected to receive an additional $3,000 from the Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement program, awarded to students who choose to study language in areas of the world identified as critically important by the U.S. State Department. In total, Reynolds’ Gilman Scholarship amounts to $8,000 for 2009-2010.
Sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program was created in 2000 to provide scholarships to U.S. undergraduates with financial need for study abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations. The congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education.
Reynolds is the ninth New College student to be granted a Gilman Scholarship since 2004.
