Theresa Burress, humanities librarian at New College of Florida’s Jane Bancroft Cook Library, was named a “Mover & Shaker” in the library field by the national publication Library Journal.
In its March 15 issue, Library Journal named 52 outstanding professionals nationwide committed to providing excellent service and shaping the future of libraries. Burress was selected because of her commitment to the profession and her community-building efforts in the sciences and the humanities.
Burress has been a leader in STEAM initiatives, including serving as co-chair since 2011 of the St. Petersburg Science Festival, an annual event which draws more than 25,000 visitors. She also has worked to build communities of practice in digital humanities and information literacy.
Since 2014, Burress has worked as the humanities librarian at Cook Library, which serves the academic communities of New College of Florida and USF Sarasota-Manatee.
Before joining New College, she was a science and outreach librarian with the U.S. Geological Survey.
She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature, and earned her master’s degree in library science from University of Maryland, College Park.
