New College of Florida is preparing to move into the next phase of the Breathe Easy New College campaign, which will make the campus smoke-free, effective July 1, 2020.
During the first phase of the campaign, which launched Feb. 1, 2018, the College restricted smoking to designated outdoor areas on campus. After July 1, 2020, smoking will not be permitted on campus.
“Breathe Easy New College benefits our students, staff, faculty, and visitors by reducing the direct health impacts of smoking, including secondhand smoke, and promoting a healthy campus environment,” says President Don O’Shea.
The Breathe Easy New College initiative has been led by the students, faculty, and staff on the Tobacco-Free Task Force. Members of the campus community who smoke tobacco and wish to quit are encouraged to visit or call 1-877-U-Can-Now.
“We understand that this transition to a smoke-free campus may be difficult for some members of our community, which is why the task force recommended implementing the transition over a period of more than two years. This will allow community members who currently smoke to make adjustments.” O’Shea says, “Together, we can make New College a healthier place to work, teach, and learn.”
New College employees, students, and visitors will be expected to adhere to the smoke-free campus policy that goes into effect July 1, 2020. Anyone who smokes on campus will be asked to move off-campus or to extinguish their smoking products. Repeated violations or refusal to comply with this College policy by students or employees will be addressed by the Dean of Student Affairs or Office of Human Resources respectively.
