New College of Florida will host a Natural Science Seminar on Friday, April 16, at 4 pm in the Soo Bong Chae Auditorium.  Professor Victor de la Pena from the Department of Statistics at Columbia University will give a talk entitled ” A Method for Estimating Threshold Crossing Time with Application to Climate Change.”  This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

In this talk, Professor de la Pena will compare two estimators of the crossing time of a boundary. In addition, he will show the optimality of the estimator. As an application, he will provide an estimate of the projected reduction in rainfall in two subtropical regions: the US southwest and the Mediterranean.
