The Jane Bancroft Cook Library is hosting an exhibit entitled “Indigenous Identity: Maya of Chiapas, Mexico.” The exhibit will be held in the lobby of the library and runs from April 21 to May 17. The exhibit is curated by New College students Nicholas Manting-Brewer, Mallory Fenn, Evan Giomi, Kristen Michelle Leahy and Samantha Ortiz.
Opening Reception, April 23
There will be an opening reception on Friday, April 23, from 4 to 5:30 pm in the lobby of the Jane Bancroft Cook Library. During the reception there will be a screening of the videos produced in conjunction with the exhibit and master weaver Concepción Poou Coy Tharin will give a demonstration of weaving on a traditional Maya backstrap loom. Refreshments will be served.
Family Day, May 1
On Saturday, May 1, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, a special series of events will be held in the Hal C. Ball Anthro Lab (next to Four Winds). This will include crafts activities for kids, the screening of several videos about Maya culture, a demonstration of backstrap weaving by master weaver Concepción Poou Coy Tharin, and an introductory workshop on deciphering Maya hieroglyphs for adults.
