Photo gallery: Students get up-close look at medieval manuscripts

Professor of Medieval and Renaissance History Carrie Beneš gave students a rare opportunity to physically examine several medieval manuscripts.
Les Enluminures, a medieval manuscript dealer based in Paris, selected New College of Florida to participate in the third round of its Manuscripts in the Curriculum program. New College received 10 manuscripts on loan this semester the Fall 2019 semester as part of the program for use in the classroom and community outreach projects.
Beneš’ class gathered in the Jane Bancroft Cook Library to discuss what they might see, from how the 800-year-old books are stitched and bound, the significance of the different scripts and colors used, to the condition of the parchment.
Beneš is planning a public event showcasing the manuscripts at the Library Sept. 27, from noon to 2 p.m., called “Meet a Manuscript, Make a Manuscript.” Participants can study an 800-year-old book up close, turn its pages, examine its binding, and ask questions. There will also be paper, rulers, calligraphy pens, and instructions available for anyone who wants to try making their own manuscript.

Founded in Sarasota in 1960, New College of Florida is the state's only legislatively designated Honors College of Florida. New College prepares intellectually curious students for lives of great achievement by providing a highly individualized education that integrates academic rigor with career-building experiences. New College offers 45 undergraduate majors in liberal arts and sciences, a master’s degree program in data science, and certificates in technology, finance, and business skills.
