New College of Florida Kicks Off 2011-2012 School Year with Orientation and Mini-Classes
August 17, 2011 — The New College of Florida campus is abuzz with students returning to campus today in time for two days of mini-classes on Thursday and Friday. New College also welcomes the 280 new students participating in Orientation Week, August 14-21. The first day of classes for the 2011-2012 academic year is Monday, August 22, with the grand opening of the new Academic Center on U.S. 41, scheduled to hold nearly 50 classes this fall term.
This Thursday and Friday, New College students will choose from more than 130 mini-classes, each 15 minutes long, to meet professors and sample a variety of course offerings in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences such as:
- Peoples & Cultures of the Middle East with Uzi Baram, Professor of Anthropology
- Quantum Mechanics II with George Ruppeiner, Professor of Physics
- Jazz Poetry with Robert Zamsky, Assistant Professor of English
- Politics of China with Barbara Hicks, Associate Professor of Political Science
- Intro to Bioinformatics with Christopher Hart, Assistant Professor of Bioinfomatics
- Wood Working with Richard Herzog, Assistant Professor of Sculpture
- Developmental Economics with Tarron Khemraj, Assistant Professor of Economics
- Plant Physiology with Amy Clore, Associate Professor of Biology
- Literary Movements with Amy Reid, Associate Professor of French Language & Literature
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Patrick McDonald, Professor of Mathematics

New College’s enrollment for the 2011-2012 academic year is expected to top 800 students for the third year in a row. Last year, 801 students were enrolled.
