Giving Challenge
By Abby Weingarten
Generating more than $206,000 from 726 donations in 24 hours, the 2020 Giving Challenge provided a major financial boost to the New College Foundation last week.
During a year complicated by a pandemic, when relief is needed more than ever, the gifts (which came in online from noon to noon April 28 and 29) were met with heartfelt thanks from the Foundation staff.
“It’s gratifying to see how many believe in New College’s mission of educating intellectually curious students,” said MaryAnneYoung, the vice president of advancement and executive director for the Foundation. “We had many faculty, staff and some students who were able to participate, even in spite of everything. It’s heartwarming in these challenging times that we can help our students who need us.”
The annual Giving Challenge—presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and strengthened by The Patterson Foundation—connected nearly 700 nonprofit partners and donors. The Foundation will use the funds to support its next generation of scholars.
Prior to the Giving Challenge, New College had already been building its student emergency fund during the coronavirus outbreak (raising more than $35,000 from faculty, staff, students and alumni). The Foundation also recently received a $28,600 grant from Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation to help students in need. Since 1980, New College Foundation has raised upwards of $100 million in public and private funds for everything from endowments and academic programs to faculty positions and new buildings.
This was the seventh year that New College participated in the event, and the Foundation has brought in more than $800,000 (including this year’s totals). Donors who gave between $25 and $100 had their gifts matched one-to-one by The Patterson Foundation. Additionally, gifts made to New College were matched one-to-one (up to $50,000) by a Friend of New College. In other words, contributors turned $100 into $300 gifts instantly.
“These gifts make a world of difference in providing students a stellar education,” Young said. “Donors are changing a life by providing access to a world-class New College education.”
