A world-class research facility, the National Institutes of Health, has awarded not one, but two 2012 Gulf Breeze High School graduates competitive research training awards. The NIH Postbac IRTA program provides recent college graduates who are planning to apply to graduate or professional school an opportunity to spend one or two years performing full-time research. Postbac IRTAs/CRTAs work side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. These programs require that they apply to medical or graduate school upon completion.

Neal Lacey (NCF) and Max Colbert will be working at NIH together.  While at GBHS, both Lacey and Colbert were on the high school varsity soccer team, and came to know each other through club soccer in Pensacola.
Lacey went to New College of Florida in Sarasota and graduated in January with an Honors degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Colbert went to Florida State University in Tallahassee and is graduating in May with a degree in biology.
