New Schools of Black Thought Symposium: Systemic Injustice & the Meaning of Citizenship in America's Democracy

February 8 10:00 am - 9:00 pm

New Schools of Black Thought is an annual Black History Month symposium that brings artists, activists, and academics together to dialogue about contemporary issues relevant to Africana communities. Given the unjustly disproportionate impact that the criminal justice system has had on Black and Latinx communities, we are going to focus this year’s symposium on the particular difficulties that folks who have been incarcerated face as they try to reintegrate into their communities. We will examine the work of individuals and organizations with people while they are incarcerated and after incarceration that tries to help individuals lead full lives. We will also examine institutionalized barriers to full participation in American society, like felon disenfranchisement, and the efforts of activists and communities to challenge these barriers. Towards these ends, the symposium will have two panels: one focusing on various educational and life skills programs for those who are incarcerated and returning citizens and a second panel focusing on the ongoing organizing that is happening around Amendment 4.
