Excited prospective students arrived on campus with their families to sample life as a New College student Feb. 16, as part of Experience New College. The biannual open-house event gives prospective students an opportunity to explore the campus and experience the college’s culture of discovery.

Provost Barbara Feldman welcomed the students following a coffee and doughnut reception, and student ambassador Katie Thurson gave students a preview of their day. Both women discussed the broad range of opportunities students have to pursue their passions at New College.

Students then attended a variety of sessions designed to immerse them in New College’s rich student life, including the highlight of Experience New College: mini classes. From The Poetry of Sappho to Dolphin Communication, and from How the Internet Works to Does Anything Really Matter?, New College faculty hosted a range of mini classes for prospective students to demonstrate the quality of a New College education and show off a key part of the New College experience.

Alongside mini classes, other Experience New College highlights include a visit from Sarasota Jungle Gardens, featuring local wildlife; pastries from Mama G’s Bakery and Coffee House; and the time for prospective students to speak directly with faculty members from various areas of concentration. New College administrative offices were also on hand to show students the basics of New College academics, the admissions process, and the housing application process.

The next Experience New College will take place in November.
