Nathaniel Chandler, a fourth-year student majoring in mathematics, has been named the winner of the 2009 Margaret L. Bates Award for Scholarship in Gender Studies at New College of Florida.

Established in 2008, the Bates Award, which includes a small cash gift, is given annually to a student or students who exhibit outstanding academic achievement through their research in gender studies and who present their work at an academic conference.  The award is named in honor of distinguished New College Professor Emerita of Political Science Margaret L. Bates in recognition for her long-standing support of students’ work in gender studies at the College.

Chandler earned this year’s Bates Award for his paper entitled “Mathematics: A Vehicle for Rational Change,” which he presented at the Southeastern Women’s Studies Association Conference (SEWSA) at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, this past April.

“We are proud to present this year’s Margaret L. Bates Award to Nate Chandler,” said Associate Professor of French Language and Literature Amy Reid, who also serves as director of the gender studies program at New College. “His paper and presentation at this year’s SEWSA Conference are terrific examples of the high level of research and scholarship exhibited by undergraduates at New College.”

Chandler, who will graduate on May 22 with a bachelor of arts degree specializing in mathematics, recently received more good news as well.  Along with fellow graduating seniors Josh Abbott and Anne-Laure Grignon, he will travel to the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom next fall, where he will begin graduate studies in mathematics.  His thesis advisor was New College Professor of Mathematics Pat McDonald.
