A Good Week for Rankings: Forbes, Fiske and Newsweek/Daily Beast All Select New College of Florida

Post Date and Author:

August 8, 2012 — August is off to a good start for New College of Florida, which once again finds itself highly ranked by some of the country’s leading arbiters of a quality higher education – Forbes, Fiske and Newsweek/The Daily Beast.
Forbes:  No. 15 Best Value in the Nation
At Forbes, New College landed the no. 15 spot on its “Top 100 Best Buy Colleges for 2012,” a list with five military service academies and three tuition-free colleges in the top eight.  Last year New College garnered the no. 16 spot.  Only two other Florida public schools — the University of West Florida and Florida State University—made the top 20 best value list.
New College also landed a very respectable no. 189 spot on Forbes’s 2012 list of the 650 top undergraduate colleges in America. Only three other Florida institutions made the cut of the most selective 200 colleges and universities – the University of Florida at no. 80, University of Miami at no. 132, and Florida State University at no. 193. The overall rankings focus “on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, high graduation rates and low levels of debt,” according to Forbes.
Forbes’ rankings are compiled by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C., think tank. The “100 Best Buy Colleges” are calculated by taking each college’s overall quality rank on Forbes’ annual list of “America’s Top Colleges” and dividing that by the school’s tuition (in-state where applicable) and fees.

Fiske:  Success through Individualism
Fiske Guide to Colleges released its 2013 edition, in which New College was included as one of the 300+ “best and most interesting colleges and universities in the United States.”  New College is referenced as a “fast rising star” and “a great bargain.” New College’s listing begins with, “The mere existence of New College of Florida is proof that it’s possible to find success through individualism.”  It ends with, “Without a Greek scene, grades or crazy football games, NCF is definitely not your typical southern institution. But the eccentricity doesn’t impede students’ academic motivation, or their love of learning… ‘Come here to learn what you like, how you like it,’ says one Humanities major.’”
Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, Fiske Guide to Colleges 2013 is a selective, subjective and systematic look at the best colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain, with details on academics, campus setting, student body, financial aid, housing, food, social life and extracurricular activities.
