Professor Emeritus of British and American Literature

M.A., Ph.D., Duke University
A.B., Princeton University

Professor Miller joined the New College faculty when the school opened for classes in 1964 and was often a critic of the traditional teaching of literature and writing as being too dry to effectively engage students. Instead, he developed classes where students were encouraged to actively participate in the world around them and to write about their experiences from their own, unique vantage points. He was renowned for his ability to interact with students at a personal level and to engage their ideas and writing, whether their interests were in the humanities, the sciences, or the arts.

A poet and scholar whose work appeared in numerous journals and publications through the years, Miller founded New CollAge Magazine in 1970. The tri-quarterly journal, featuring the poetry and artwork of New College students as well as others, quickly gained a following and is still distributed on college campuses and in bookstores nationwide.

Professor Miller retired from full time teaching in fall 2004.
