Parent/Family Orientation Schedule

The schedule of events for the Parent/Family Orientation Aug. 19-20.

Saturday, August 19:

9 a.m. to noon: Check-in / Move-in
Location: Harry Sudakoff Conference Center

While your student is checking into New College, take this opportunity to mingle with New College staff and help your student move into their residence hall!

9 a.m. to noon: Mailing Services (Palmer E) is open for package pick-up
Location:  Palmer E, First Floor

Stop by the mail room, meet the staff, and pick up any packages that you or your new student might have sent ahead of time.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Bookstore is Open
Location: 6301 N. Tamiami Trail

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Finance and Parking Services Office Open Hours
Location: Palmer D (PMD 123)

The Finance Office will be accepting payment via cash for student accounts. Credit card payments must be done online. E-checks can also be done online.

Parking Services will be selling parking permits. Vehicle registration, your student’s driver’s license, and fee payment are required in order to purchase a parking permit. Parking Services will be accepting payment via cash, check and credit card.

Noon to 2 p.m.: Welcome Lunch
Location: Hamilton Center

Enjoy your first lunch on campus in style. Catered by Metz, our dining service, enjoy cook-out style cuisine with your student and other families.

1-2 p.m.: SuccessQuest Welcome Reception (restricted; invitation only)
Location: Hamilton Classroom, 7

An invitation only reception for parents and family members, as well as students, occupying the SuccessQuest Living Learning Community.

1-3 p.m.: Counseling and Wellness Center Open Hours
Location: Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) – Palmer Campus, across from Library

The CWC staff will be available to say hello, show you the facilities, and answer any questions you might have about wellness services available to your student while they are on campus.

2-3:30 p.m.: Parent/Family Welcome Panel (restricted; parent/family members only)
Location: Harry Sudakoff Conference Center

Following an introduction by our President, Dr. Donal O’Shea, meet key leaders in the areas of Academics, Student Affairs, Campus Safety, and Counseling and Wellness. Presenters will share more about their role in your student’s transition to college. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A session.

3:30-5 p.m.: NCAA/Foundation Welcome Reception (restricted; parents/family members only)
Location: Academic Center (ACE), Room 102

Please join the New College Alumnae/i Association (NCAA) and Foundation for a special parents’ reception. Meet and mingle with our staff, alumnae/i and volunteer board members as you learn about NCAA programs, events and services that benefit your student. Discover fun ways to engage and support New College through our various volunteer programs. Food and drinks will be provided at this free event for new parents and guardians.

3:30-4:30 p.m.: Parent/Family Information Sessions (restricted; parents/family members only)
ACE Academic Center, specific rooms noted below

Covering a variety of topics, there will be multiple breakout sessions available for your to attend today and tomorrow (Sunday) in order to better understand New College support system, for both you and your student.

Option 1: Steps for Student Success; Robert Zamsky – Dean of Studies and Brian Scholten – Registrar
Location: ACE Room 115

Led by the Dean of Studies and Registrar, this session will focus on the academic program at New College and how you can help support student success. Details about the academic program, including the contract system, will be discussed as well as ways you – as parents – can help guide your student to make good, productive academic decisions.

Option 2: Campus Safety and Security; Chief Mike Kessie, New College Campus Police
Location: ACE Room 217

Chief Kessie will present on campus safety, specific ways you can keep your child safe, and ways that you can interact with Campus Police during your student’s tenure here.

Option 3: Transitioning Your Student to College with Dr. Anne Fisher
Location: ACE Room 239

Director of the Counseling and Wellness Center, Dr. Anne Fisher, will lead this session on how to help transition your child, and you, to college. She’ll share some helpful insight, as well as take questions and share campus resources, not only for your student but also for you.

4:30-5:30 p.m.: Parent/Family Information Sessions (restricted; parents/family members only)
Location: ACE Academic Center, specific rooms noted below

Option 1: Student Disability Services 101, Meighen Hopton, Director of Disability Services
Location: ACE Room 115

Learn about the various ways Student Disability Services (SDS) can support your student’s needs. This session will cover registration procedures, reasonable accommodations, services offered through SDS and more. Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions about services and how you can support your student.

Option 2: Internships – What? Where? When? And How?; Andrea Knies, Assistant Director of the Center of Engagement & Opportunity (CEO)
Location: ACE Room 239

Meet Andrea Knies, the Assistant Director of the CEO, and learn about the why, when, and how of internships at New College.

Option 3: Coastal Living and Marine Science at New College; Dr. Sandra Gilchrist, Professor of Biology and Director of the Pritzker Marine Biology Lab
Location: Pritzker Marine Lab

We invite you to learn more about your student’s new home on the coast! The knowledgeable staff will talk about about hurricane preparedness, plastics/microplastics, sailing/boating, as well as opportunities related to the bay (clean ups, research, fishing, kayaking, volunteer opportunities) for you and your students.

Option 4: FERPA – What is it and how does it effect you?; Brian Scholten, Registrar
Location: ACE Room 218

This session with cover the basics around The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), how it impacts your student, and how it impacts you as the family member.

Sunday, August 20:    

8-8:30 a.m.: Guided Reflection with Dr. Duane Khan
Location: Bayfront

9-10 a.m.: Parent/Family Information Sessions (restricted; parents/family members only)
Location: ACE Academic Center, specific rooms noted below

Option 1: Financial Aid 101; Kim McCabe, Associate Director of Financial Aid
Location: ACE Room 217

Find out answers to your questions about financial aid, like: How does it work? When do we file paperwork?

Option 2: Living On Campus – Residential Life at New College
Location: ACE Room 201

What is it like for your student living on campus? What resources are available to help them transition to the campus community? How can you support them? Get the answers to these questions and many more from members of our professional residential life staff.

10-11 a.m.: Parent/Family Information Sessions (restricted; parents/family members only)

Option 1: Florida Pre-Paid; Kim Bendickson, Controller – New College Business Office
ACE Room 102

Meet with Kim Bendickson, campus Controller, to learn the finer points about Florida Pre-Paid as well as important information about paying tuition.

Option 2: Transitions for Parents of Out-of-State Students; Julie Morris, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs
ACE Room 218

A casual conversation with Julie Morris, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, about the support available for our out-of-state students and thier parents as well as information about the Sarasota/Bradenton community.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:  Farewell Brunch
Location: Hamilton Center

While it may be the conclusion of Parent and Family Orientation Weekend, please enjoy brunch together before heading home!

1 p.m.:  Parent and Guardian Orientation ends.
