Parent/Family Orientation Schedule

The schedule of events for the Parent/Family Orientation Aug. 18-19.

Orientation at New College is a weeklong event that is scheduled for all new students. Please see the Student Orientation Schedule for more information about the Student Schedule.

Schedule is subject to change, please check back frequently for updates. A final copy of the schedule will be provided during Orientation.

Saturday, August 18:

8 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Orientation Check-in / Move-in
Location: Harry Sudakoff Conference Center

While your student is checking into New College, take this opportunity to mingle with New College staff and help your student move into their residence hall!

8-10 a.m.: Parent /Family / Student Continental Breakfast
Location: Hamilton Center

Breakfast will be available for those family members and students who have paid their orientation registration.

9 a.m. to noon: Mailing Services is open for package pick-up
Location:  Palmer E, First Floor

Stop by the mail room, meet the staff, and pick up any packages that you or your new student might have sent ahead of time.10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Bookstore is Open
Location: 6301 N. Tamiami Trail

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Finance and Parking Services Office Open Hours
Location: Palmer D (PMD 123)

The Finance Office will be accepting payment via cash for student accounts. Credit card payments must be done online. E-checks can also be done online.

Parking Services will be selling parking permits. Vehicle registration, your student’s driver’s license, and fee payment are required in order to purchase a parking permit. Parking Services will be accepting payment via cash, check and credit card.

Noon to 1 p.m. Parent / Family / Student Lunch
Location: Hamilton Center

Lunch will be provided for those family members and students who have paid their orientation registration.

Noon to 1 p.m.: SuccessQuest LLC Reception
Location: HLC 7

Closed reception for parents, families, and students of SuccessQuest.

Noon to 1 p.m.: International Student Lunch
Location: HLC 2

Closed reception for parents, families, and students of International Student Orientation.

1-2:30 p.m.  President’s Welcome / Parent’s Panel-Just for Families
Location: Sudakoff Conference Center

2:45-5 p.m. Open Parent Question Session 
Location: ACE Lounge
Stop by ACE Lounge and meet with professional staff members to ask any questions you have regarding your student, the college, or specific concerns you have. This is not meant to replace your attendance at sessions, rather to enhance it!

2:45-3:45 p.m.:  Parent Sessions – Round #1
Location: Various ACE classrooms; sessions run concurrently

Option #1: Student Disability Services 101, Meighen Hopton – Director of Student Disability Services
Location: ACE Room 102
Learn about the various ways SDS can support your student’s needs. This session will cover registration procedures, reasonable accommodations, services offered through SDS and more. Parents will have the opportunity ask questions about services and how you can support your student.

Option #2: The Ins and Outs of Florida Pre-Paid – Representative from the Finance Office
Location: ACE Room 218
Meet with a member of the Finance Office team to learn the finer points about Florida Pre-Paid as well as important information about paying tuition.

Option #3: Campus Safety and Security; Chief Mike Kessie, New College Campus Police
Location: ACE Room 217
Chief Kessie will present on campus safety, specific ways you can keep your child safe, and ways that you can interact with Campus Police during your student’s tenure here.

Option #4: Living On Campus – Residential Life at New College
Location: ACE Room 201
What is it like for your student living on campus? What resources are available to help them transition to the campus community? How can you support them? Get the answers to these questions and many more from members of our professional residential life staff.

Option #5: Steps for Student Success; Suzanne Sherman – Associate Provost; Brian Scholten – Registrar
Location: ACE Room 115
Led by the Associate Provost and Registrar, this session will focus on the academic program at New College and how you can help support student success. Details about the academic program, including the contract system, will be discussed as well as ways you – as parents – can help guide your student to make good, productive academic decisions.

Option #6: Transitioning Your Student to College- Dr. Anne Fisher, Director of Counseling and Wellness
Location: ACE 327
Discuss ways for parents to support students as they adapt to college, manage issues as they arise, and care for themselves as they start a new chapter!

4-5 p.m.: Parent  Sessions – Round #2 
Location: Various ACE classrooms; sessions run concurrently

Option #1: Campus Safety and Security; Chief Mike Kessie, New College Campus Police
Location: ACE Room 217
Chief Kessie will present on campus safety, specific ways you can keep your child safe, and ways that you can interact with Campus Police during your student’s tenure here.

5-7:30 p.m.: Dinner on your own

7:30-9:30 p.m.: Parent / Family / Student Farewell Dessert Reception
Location: College Hall (Bayfront)

Parent / Family Orientations Ends at 9 p.m.
Parents and family members are asked to leave campus upon the conclusion of the dessert reception. Students will remain on campus, and there will be additional, student-only evening activities for interested students.
