For Environmental Studies Students

Welcome to Environmental Studies

The New College Environmental Studies Program (ESP) was founded in 1972. Since that time, over 200 students have graduated with environmental degrees, and many more have benefited from the environmental studies classes and projects. Today, the ESP supports a variety of student and community environmental projects, all of them stressing hands-on, interdisciplinary and regional work.

The ES Program offers students a challenging core curriculum in environmental studies as well as specialized advanced training in one of five tracks — Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Ecological Anthropology, Urban Studies and the Environment, or Environmental Literature, Religion, and Philosophy.

Students planning an ES career are required to complete the core curriculum while taking classes within the tracks that are of most interest to them. By the end of their second year, students will need to have developed a working relationship with faculty in one of the tracks and discussed with a faculty member the possibility of that person sponsoring their work as an ES student.
