Why is New College growing its enrollment?

A wide range of considerations suggests that the minimum size that New College should be is 1,200 students. Outside of the Claremont consortium, the smallest of the top 40 national liberal arts colleges is Haverford College with 1,194 students. The next smallest is Swarthmore with 1,542 students. The four-year graduation rate is correlated with size, as is the ability to sustain a broad range of majors in the two dozen academic disciplines common to almost all high quality liberal arts institutions. How fast will your enrollment grow?

The enrollment growth with take place over seven years. Combined with higher retention rates, the College plans to enroll 1,200 students by 2022-23.

What was the total amount of additional dollars allocated in the 17-18 budget when compared to 16-17?

New College received $5.4 million in recurring dollars to implement the first year of the three-year Growth Plan. Additional funding will be requested for FY 2018-19 and FY 2019-20 to allow the College to fully implement the operating portion of the plan as well as design and construct a facility to support enrollment growth.

In addition to growth dollars, New College received $2.1 million in recurring funds for uses including but not limited to recruiting and retaining exemplary faculty, supporting research efforts including undergraduate participation in research, improving our 4-year graduation rate, and increasing our national academic standing and anticipates receiving one-time non-recurring dollars related to the SUS performance funding metrics. Last, but not least, New College received $1.8 million to complete construction of the addition to the Heiser Natural Sciences Building. This new addition supporting STEM education will open in August 2017.

How will you house the new students? Will New College remain residential?

We will remain residential. We expect to construct new student residences using public-private partnerships (P3) in Year 3 of the Growth Plan.

Will New College change in character?

It will not change in character. The Growth Plan will allow New College to increase its four-year graduation rate to more than 80 percent, competitive with the very best universities in the country. It will provide more interns and graduates to stoke the local economy and will further increase New College’s throughput as a critical pipeline for Florida’s scientists.

How many professors will be tenure track?

All of the new faculty positions will be tenure track – 120 in total.

Will there be new construction projects?

Yes. In addition to residences, we envisage adding another 125,000 square feet of space.

Will there be new majors or programs?

Potentially. Faculty will be meeting over the summer (2017) to work on the future academic program. All majors will continue to be liberal arts majors.

Will the Growth Plan require an increase to tuition?

No. Tuition is determined by the Florida Legislature.

Can New College maintain its admissions standards as it grows?

Yes. Combined with increased enrollment, New College expects to increase our retention rate as well as our graduation rate, matching or excelling current selectivity rates. See an article from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
