I'm an anthropology and religion major. I studied abroad for my junior year in Jerusalem, at the Hebrew University International School. I was part of a program called the Lainer Interns for Jewish Education, where half of the internship is a class that you take on Jewish education courses and half of it is actually going into the community in Israel and teaching. I've been fascinated with the Ethiopian Jewish community ever since a course I took with Professor Uzi Baram on race and ethnicity. When I was in Israel, I organized an internship where I took a bus to a lower economic neighborhood and tutored Ethiopian students once a week. I was helping them with English and it was really amazing, working with them first hand. I had four students--sixth grade girls--and it made me want to continue working with that community for my thesis project, as well.
