Daniel Hauck 's  Story

My decision to come here was influenced by a professor from my other school. I would consider her an unofficial rep for New College. When I walked into her classroom she said, 'You belong at New College.' So I set up a meeting with a couple of other students from my class and [the transfer coordinator]; as soon as I stepped on campus, I fell in love. I say it reminds me of Vermont on the bay in Sarasota. It reminds me of my home, and I knew that's where I wanted to go. It was my only choice and the only school I applied for. I felt really lucky when I found this place.

The first week I saw an e-mail that said, 'Do you love adventures?' in the title. Well, I love adventures and travel, so of course I was interested. I opened it and saw it was an invitation to go to Antarctica or the Galapagos. One of my goals in life is to visit all seven continents. So in my first semester, I made plans to go to Antarctica on a refurbished Russian scientific ice breaker, a life changing opportunity I'd never have again. One of our excursions was to Peterman Island, where there are nesting colonies of Gentoo and Adelie Penguins. There's a group of American scientists doing research on the island, specifically to measure the impact of increased tourism on the twocolonies. It turned out to be one of the most amazing things I've ever done in my life and I've done quite a few.

In relation to what I'm doing now, it simply forwards my goal, one of my lifelong dreams. What I learned in Antarctica about international law was especially interesting, and will relate to what I want to do after New College. I'm studying urban development, smart growth and environmental discourse with a focus onworking for not-for-profit organizations. My long, long-term goal is to be a professor at a school similar to New College.
