David Rohrbacher 's  Story

Not so long ago, professor David Rohrbacher and a team of his New College Classics students embarked on an odyssey. Their epic objective - to complete and dissect James Joyce's 816-page novel, Ulysses, in a mere seven weeks.

In the midst of this intensive reading tutorial, Rohrbacher experienced one of the most challenging and satisfying feats of his teaching career. Not only had he and his students grasped the tricky material, but they had formed a real bond during the course. "I've taught at other places, and I'm really glad I have, because it showed me what it could be like somewhere else," Rohrbacher says. "Because this is such a small school, I have the chance to really get to know my students. It's a really great experience. And it's a lot of fun for me."

Rohrbacher has been a New College classics professor since 2000 and has provided the school with a fresh, animated perspective on ancient Greek and Roman culture. With a bachelors degree from Tufts University and a master's and PhD from the University of Washington, Rohrbacher is a Latin buff and offers classes on all levels of the language.
